The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) has released the notification for the Engineering Services Examination (ESE) 2027 through Examination Notice No. 02/2027-ENGG. dated 16 September 2026. The examination will be conducted for recruitment to engineering services/posts under Civil, Mechanical, Electrical, and Electronics & Telecommunication Engineering categories.
The UPSC ESE 2027 Preliminary Examination is scheduled for 31 January 2027, while the Main Examination is scheduled for 18 June 2027. The number of vacancies is expected to be approximately 480, including 19 vacancies for Persons with Benchmark Disabilities (PwBD). Eligible engineering graduates can submit their applications online through the UPSC Online portal within the prescribed dates.

The examination fee can be paid through Net Banking,
Visa/Master/RuPay Credit or Debit Card, or UPI. OBC and EWS candidates are not
exempt from the fee. The fee once paid is non-refundable.

The notification does not provide a final discipline-wise
vacancy breakup at this stage. It states that approximately 480 vacancies are
expected, including 19 PwBD vacancies.
Candidates must possess an eligible Engineering degree
from a recognized institution/university established or recognized under the
provisions specified in the notification.
For certain posts under Electronics Engineering/Indian Radio
Regulatory Service, specified M.Sc. qualifications in relevant subjects
are also accepted as mentioned in the notification.
The candidate must have attained 21 years and must
not have attained 30 years as on 01 January 2027. Accordingly,
the candidate should have been born not earlier than 02 January 1997 and not
later than 01 January 2006.
Age relaxation is available as per Government of India
rules. SC/ST candidates receive up to 5 years, eligible OBC candidates
up to 3 years, eligible Ex-servicemen and specified defence personnel
may receive relaxation as prescribed, while PwBD candidates may receive up to 10
years relaxation. Certain eligible Government servants can have the upper
age limit extended up to 35 years for specified services/posts.
The selection process consists of three stages:
Candidates qualifying the prescribed standards in the
Preliminary and Main examinations are called for the Personality
Test/Interview. The number called for the Personality Test is generally around
twice the number of vacancies. The Personality Test carries 200 marks
and has no minimum qualifying marks. Final service allocation is based on
examination ranking, service preferences, vacancies and medical fitness.

Paper-II is based on the candidate’s selected engineering
discipline — Civil, Mechanical, Electrical, or Electronics &
Telecommunication Engineering.

The Main Examination consists of two conventional-type,
discipline-specific papers of 300 marks each.

The Personality Test assesses areas including leadership,
initiative, intellectual curiosity, practical application, social qualities and
integrity of character.
Negative Marking
There is negative marking in the objective-type papers. One-third
(1/3rd) of the marks assigned to a question is deducted for an incorrect
answer. No penalty is imposed for a question left unanswered.
UPSC Engineering Services Examination 2027 Examination
Centres
The Preliminary Examination is proposed to be conducted at
numerous centres including Delhi, Chandigarh, Gurugram, Jaipur, Lucknow,
Mumbai, Kolkata, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Bhopal, Dehradun, Patna,
Ranchi, Srinagar, Thiruvananthapuram and several other cities.
The Main Examination will be conducted at 24 centres,
including Ahmedabad, Aizawl, Prayagraj, Bengaluru, Bhopal, Chandigarh, Chennai,
Cuttack, Dehradun, Delhi, Dispur, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Jammu, Kolkata, Lucknow,
Mumbai, Patna, Raipur, Ranchi, Shillong, Shimla, Thiruvananthapuram and
Visakhapatnam.
Candidates should keep scanned copies of the following
documents ready while completing the online application:
The original documents are required at the Personality
Test/Interview stage as prescribed by UPSC.
Candidates must apply online only through the UPSC
Online Application Portal. Applicants need to complete the Universal
Registration Number (URN), Common Application Form (CAF), and the
examination-specific module. Candidates should carefully enter their personal,
educational, category and examination-centre details and upload the required
photograph and signature according to the portal instructions.
The application must be completed before 06 October 2026
at 6:00 PM. Candidates should keep their Photo ID details available and
verify the application carefully before final submission because withdrawal or
correction of the submitted application is not permitted. No hard copy of the
application is required to be submitted to UPSC.
